The journey to diagnosis and treatment of a connective tissue disorder can be a bumpy one.

Those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a group of genetic connective tissue disorders, and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders often are misdiagnosed and can be misunderstood.

Sun Physical Therapy specializes in the physical therapy management of connective tissue disorders. We aim to make the path from diagnosis to treatment a smoother one.

Our one-on-one treatment model enables clinicians to take a wholistic approach to treatment. We can look at how the body functions as a whole. We target the areas that need focus to reduce pain and improve overall function. We can respond in real time to the changing needs of patients. We also offer telehealth sessions, when possible, to make participating in physical therapy as simple as possible.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of genetic connective tissue disorders. Common clinical manifestations include joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility.

The 13 types of EDS are:

  • Hypermobile
  • Classical
  • Classical-like
  • Vascular
  • Periodontal
  • Brittle cornea syndrome
  • Arthrochalasia
  • Musculocontractural
  • Spondylodysplastic
  • Kyphoscoliotic
  • Dermatosparaxis
  • Myopathic
  • Cardiac-valvular

Symptoms include: generalized chronic pain, autoimmune dysfunction, cognitive dysfunction, GI symptoms, fatigue or chronic fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, respiratory symptoms, vestibular problems, proprioceptive disturbance, and mast cell dysfunction. Some people with EDS can be asymptomatic.

Historical data has suggested a prevalence of 1 in 5000 adults. However, many believe that official counts are inaccurate due to the challenges of diagnosis and issues with underreporting. (1)

Diagnosis requires either genetic testing, meeting diagnostic criteria or both. While Sun Physical Therapy offers physical therapy treatment for connective tissue disorders, physical therapy staff do not diagnose. Please consult with your primary care physician regarding diagnosis.

The goal of physical therapy is to optimize function. Your physical therapist will design a plan of care that is unique to you and your needs. In general, physical therapy entails a mixture of manual therapy, exercise, and condition management guidance aimed at reducing pain and improving function.

To discuss your physical therapy treatment options, contact Sun Physical Therapy and schedule a free consultation today. This is a 15-minute conversation that can be conducted by phone or in person to discuss your physical therapy needs.

For further online research, an excellent resource is the Ehlers-Danlos Society, They offer lists of specialists, links to research, virtual support groups, the diagnostic checklist for hEDS, and other excellent information. We also recommend searching for local and state-level support groups. This is an excellent way to stay in-the-know on diagnosis, treatment, and management tips specific to your area. It also is an excellent way to connect with other people working and living with connective tissue disorders.
