Sun Physical Therapy is
an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy practice serving the Austin, Texas area. Sessions are one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist. We offer private treatment rooms.

Our services include a long list of manual therapy options – from Trigger Point Dry Needling to manual lymph drainage massage and beyond. We also offer skilled neuromuscular guidance and the most effective therapeutic exercise prescription.

About the owner

Sophia Maines:
DPT, OCS, CSCS, CMTPT, LSVT-C, MLD-C

Sophia received her physical therapy degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. She has practiced in Massachusetts, Maryland, and Texas.

Her goal always has been to provide the most effective care to patients. She began her career in Cambridge, MA, where she worked primarily with faculty, staff, and students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her clinical focus included running analysis and targeted manual therapy and exercise for runners.

She became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and APTA-certified Orthopedic Specialist in 2012.

After working in outpatient orthopedic clinics in the Austin area, she moved to Bethesda, MD, in 2015 to work for Jan Dommerholt, an expert in the field of myofascial pain syndromes, chronic pain and trigger point dry needling.

She became a Certified Manual Trigger Point Therapist. Her clinical focus included the treatment of patients with temporomandibular dysfunction, hypermobility syndromes, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and chronic pain.

In 2017 and again in 2023, she contributed to the revision of Janet Travell and David Simon’s book “Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual.” Look for Sophia’s work on the chapters on the latissimus dorsi and teres major muscles.

Sophia established Sun Physical Therapy in 2017.

Sophia treats all areas of the body, including the jaw, shoulder, spine, hip, knee, and foot/ankle. She has undergone advanced training in CranioSacral therapy from the Upledger Institute, Fascial manipulation (Luigi Stecco), Craniofacial dysfunction (CRAFTA) (Myopain Seminars), Active Release Technique, manual therapy from the North American Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, LSVT Big Therapy from LSVT Global.

In her free time, Sophia enjoys weight training, being outdoors and spending time with her daughter.
