LSVT Big therapy

This intensive, four-week program delivered by a certified clinician targets the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease – including hypokinesia and bradykinesia – to improve movement, daily function, and quality of life.

For many, the diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) can feel overwhelming.

LSVT Big therapy is a wonderful therapeutic program which places patients back in the driver’s seat – providing the tools to navigate the condition with reduced symptoms and a sense of empowerment.

LSVT Big treatments are tailored to each person’s own abilities and goals. Its holistic approach addresses not only movement issues, but also emotional and cognitive changes. It helps people “recalibrate” to recognize when their movements are smaller or slower than they think. It is designed to help people apply what they learn in treatment sessions to more comfortable, confident movements in everyday life beyond treatment sessions.

FAQs

LSVT stands for Lee Silverman Voice Treatment. The treatment was named after Mrs. Lee Silverman, a woman living with PD. The treatment was developed by Dr. Lorraine Ramig initially as a speech therapy. The treatment was later expanded to address mobility and movement.

Today, there are two distinct LSVT therapy programs, LSVT Loud and LSVT Big. As a physical therapy clinic, Sun Physical Therapy currently offers only LSVT Big therapy.

LSVT Big utilizes research-based treatment protocols designed specifically to address the motor, sensory and non-motor symptoms that many people with PD face. It incorporates the principles of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to grow and reorganize neural networks. This means sessions are of sufficient intensity, frequency, and specificity to induce lasting changes in the way people with PD move and live.
Sessions can be adapted for the appropriate functional level of each patient. Each exercise can be performed standing, seated or while lying down. But regardless of the position, the treatment aims to increase the amplitude of movement. And, yes, the mode of exercise is intensive and high effort.
Experience has shown that LSVT Big therapy is most effective for people in the early or middle stages of their conditions, ideally before noticing significant problems. However, it is never too late to start LSVT Big.
LSVT Big therapy is a 16-session program. Patients are required to participate in 4 consecutive daily sessions over 4 weeks. Sessions last about 1 hour. Patients will also have homework to practice after the daily session.
It is covered by most insurance. However, your benefits will be checked prior to the start of care. A prescription from your doctor specifically for LSVT Big therapy is required. Medical clearance is recommended prior to the start of LSVT Big therapy.
It is a good idea to plan for therapy at a time when you plan to be home or in the Austin area for the full 4 weeks. For example, if you have a vacation on the horizon, wait until after the vacation to start LSVT Big therapy. Also, plan transportation prior to the start of care. This ensures that the logistics of getting to/from treatment sessions is covered once you start the program.
Yes, your therapist will monitor your progress with pre- and post-intervention assessments and questionnaires. You will be able to track your progress with these.
